  • And More

For interior architectural elements, I usually apply a clear top coat.

Vintage Automobiles

Services

Due to my many years of experience as an artist, I developed the ability to make damaged wood look like new. I match existing woodgrain by using the appropriate paint or stain for the surface, and can also simulate wood where none exists.

My woodgrain restoration services can be used on a variety of surfaces. These include hardwood floors, walls, staircases, vintage automobiles, and some furniture. I repair damage from water, burns, scratches, and sun fading. Where necessary, I fill in scratches, dents, and holes, then match the surrounding woodgrain using my skills as an artist. This prevents disruption in my client’s life, as there is no need to replace boards and other wood. My services address the damage and save you from unnecessary, expensive hardwood floor replacements.

ABOUT

Valerie McNeal, founder of McNeal Wood Restoration, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from San Jose State University. She has completed over 3500 decorative art projects for private and corporate clients, specializing in murals and faux painting in high-end residences for over 30 years.

She got her start in the restoration niche after a major fire at San Jose’s historic Unitarian Church, where she restored the woodgrain to match the church’s original art from the 1890s. She has used her restoration skills on a vintage 100-point, hand-carved wooden hearse for the high-end Concourse D’Eleganza, and has simulated marble to match the counters on wall surfaces and ceilings.

Currently, Valerie uses her artistic skills to match existing textures and colors while saving customers money without the need to replace the entire existing area.

What my Clients Say ...

Valerie did a fabulous job on 1917 wooden vehicle. There were rotten spots in the wood that had to be filled with filler, then the wood graining reproduced. It took many days, but she brought the vehicle back to its original look. We applied 7 coats of spar varnish over her work. The car has won many trophies at events all over California. It is still the prized piece in a private collection.

An electrician’s helper in the crawl space erroneously drilled a hole in the floor of my study doorway. I was told by consultants that it was a problem as my entire house had refinished oak floors and any repair would not match the adjoining floor. The wood repair man told me Valerie was my best option. Valerie did a stellar job filling, painting and matching my floor to the adjoining wood. After about seven years, my floor is still intact. Valerie does a great job. She’s an artist in the best sense of the word. Her work had withstood the test of time.

For some years, I’ve known, respected and admired Valerie as an artist, muralist, and faux painter. I knew her work was extraordinary. But I never realized what she put into it until I had the opportunity to assist her on one of her faux painting projects. There, a side of Valerie I had never known was revealed to me. Her focus shifted entirely to her client’s needs and manifested by the quality and efficiency of her work. She knew what was required to get the job done and demanded in no uncertain terms that my part of the work had to meet her high standards. It wasn’t easy, but I normally worked in a field that demanded a similar work ethic and client focus and that allowed me to understand her attitude. From that point on, I gained a whole new level of respect for not only Valerie’s talent but her focus on her customer’s needs and the quality of service she provides to them.
